Overview
- Nielsen announced on Aug. 19 a package of methodology changes that will add audio captured from wearable, smart watch–style devices on panelists to its measurement system.
- The wearables are designed to detect co‑viewing by picking up TV audio at hand level so multiple viewers in a room, bar, or party can be counted without panelists logging in.
- Nielsen is updating demographic assignment with a household demographic assignment model (HDAM) and is combining Census American Community Survey data with the National Hispanic Enumeration Survey to better estimate Spanish‑language and household composition.
- The company is also revising Big Data + Panel weighting, adjusting how Automated Content Recognition sources are aligned with panel measures, and fixing survey timing to reflect recent viewing trends.
- Nielsen says it has shared preview data with clients and coordinated timing with the Media Rating Council, but the Video Advertising Bureau has raised concerns about possible inconsistencies and the changes could shift ad valuations for high‑profile sports and live events.
