The couple, who married in 2010, were once considered a political power duo, with Sturgeon serving as Scotland's first minister and Murrell as SNP chief executive.
Murrell was charged in April 2024 in connection with embezzlement of SNP funds, while Sturgeon was arrested and released without charge in June 2023; both deny any wrongdoing.
Sturgeon continues to live in the couple's Glasgow home, and the separation is described as amicable, with no immediate plans for either to move out.
Sturgeon has focused on writing her memoirs and attending cultural events, including collaborations with crime writer Val McDermid, while remaining a backbench MSP.
