Nicklaus Warns PGA Tour Schedule Risks Squeezing Smaller Events

A concentration of signature tournaments in short stretches could weaken fields and increase player fatigue, Nicklaus says.

Overview

  • Jack Nicklaus voiced concern at the Memorial on Tuesday that too many big tournaments are clustered together and warned this pattern could become a problem for the PGA Tour.
  • He cited the Cognizant Classic at PGA National as an example of a smaller event that has struggled to attract top players when it is placed between multiple signature tournaments.
  • Nicklaus said he plans to meet with Tour CEO Brian Rolapp and Commissioner Jay Monahan to press his concerns and expected to sit down with them on Wednesday.
  • Rolapp has already created a Future Competitions Committee and outlined emerging themes for a 2028 overhaul that include a concentrated season, 21–26 elevated events, larger cut-era fields near 120 players, promotion and relegation between event tracks, and postseason change proposals.
  • If leaders do not act, tournament directors and sponsors could face weaker fields and lower visibility while players may face more fatigue, and Rolapp is due to provide a further update in about three weeks ahead of the Travelers Championship.
