NIA Files Supplementary Chargesheet in Chandigarh Grenade Case, Expands BKI Probe

Investigators attribute the plot to overseas BKI handlers, with efforts to trace absconders ongoing.

Overview

  • The NIA filed a supplementary chargesheet on October 3 against Abhijot Singh in the Sector-10 Chandigarh grenade attack that targeted a retired Punjab Police officer.
  • The agency says Pakistan-based Harwinder Singh Rinda coordinated the conspiracy with US-based Happy Passia, who oversaw recruitment, funding, and the supply of weapons and explosives.
  • Investigators say Abhijot was recruited in Armenia in December 2023 by aide Shamsher Shera, conducted reconnaissance in July 2024, and joined an August attempt before Rohan and Vishal carried out the September 11, 2024 strike.
  • Rinda and Passia remain declared absconders as the NIA seeks additional accused and logistical suppliers; Hindustan Times reported the grenade used was a Pakistan-made HG-84.
  • In parallel actions, the NIA chargesheeted 11 over the April 6 RPG attack on Batala’s Qila Lal Singh police station and four over the April 7 grenade attack on ex-minister Manoranjan Kalia’s house in Jalandhar.
