NIA Court Sentences Md. Kamruj Zaman to Life in Assam Hizb-ul-Mujahideen Case

Officials say the ruling curbs efforts to spread the Pakistan-based outfit’s network in the Northeast.

Overview

  • The Special NIA Court in Guwahati convicted Zaman on December 30 and ordered all sentences to run concurrently.
  • He received life imprisonment under Section 18 of the UAPA and five years each under Section 18B read with IPC 120B and Section 38 of the UAPA.
  • The case RC-08/2018/NIA-GUW stems from a 2017–18 plan to establish a Hizb-ul-Mujahideen module in Assam, with recruits including Sahnawaz Alom, Saidul Alam and Omar Faruk.
  • NIA filed a chargesheet in March 2019, three co-accused later pleaded guilty and were convicted, and another accused, Jaynal Uddin, died during the trial.
  • Following the verdict, Zaman was shifted to Guwahati Central Jail, and security agencies described the outcome as a setback to militant expansion in the region.
