NIA Court Sentences Lucknow Accused to Time Served After Guilty Plea in Al‑Qaeda Plot Case

The court acted on a guilty plea following an NIA probe into an AGH module being raised in Lucknow.

Overview

  • Mohammad Moid received a sentence equal to his custody period of one year, nine months and 13 days, plus a Rs 5,000 fine, after pleading guilty on Thursday.
  • He was convicted under Section 25(1B)(a) of the Arms Act read with Section 120B of the IPC in connection with an Al‑Qaeda‑linked conspiracy.
  • The case began with July 2021 arrests by the Uttar Pradesh ATS based on inputs from Al‑Qaeda member Umar Halmandi about an Ansar Ghazwat‑ul‑Hind cell.
  • NIA findings say Moid, with Shakeel and Mohammad Mustaqeem, helped Minhaj and Museeruddin obtain arms and explosives for the plot, with radicalisation attributed to Tawheed and Adil Nabi alias Musa and a pledged baiyat by Museeruddin.
  • NIA took over the probe, filed a chargesheet on January 5, 2022 and a supplementary chargesheet in August 2022, and trials for the remaining five accused are ongoing.
