NIA Court Gives Life Term to Key Accused in Assam Hizb-ul-Mujahideen Module Case

The sentencing caps an NIA case over a 2017–18 plot to build a militant module linked to Hizb-ul-Mujahideen.

Overview

  • Md. Kamruj Zaman, also known as Dr Hurairah and Kamaruddin, was convicted on December 30 by the NIA Special Court in Guwahati.
  • He received life imprisonment under Section 18 of the UAPA with two additional five-year simple imprisonment terms under Section 18B read with IPC 120B and Section 38 of the UAPA, to run concurrently.
  • The court imposed a fine of Rs 5,000 for each count with three months’ simple imprisonment in case of default.
  • Investigators said he raised a proscribed Pakistan-based Hizb-ul-Mujahideen module in Jamunamukh, Hojai during 2017–18 by recruiting Sahnawaz Alom, Saidul Alam and Omar Faruk.
  • The case, registered as RC 08/2018/NIA-GUW, earlier saw guilty pleas and convictions of the three recruits, while a fifth accused, Jaynal Uddin, died during the trial.
