NIA chargesheets ULFA (I) chief Paresh Baruah, 2 others for IED blast conspiracy in Assam

Overview

  • The charge sheet filed on June 13 names Paresh Baruah, Abhijit Gogoi and Jahnu Boruah under sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act and the Explosive Substances Act.
  • Investigators allege the trio conspired to plant over 20 IEDs statewide, including a device at Dispur Last Gate in Guwahati, to disrupt Independence Day celebrations.
  • Officials say technical flaws prevented the bombs from detonating between 6 am and noon on August 15, averting potential casualties and damage.
  • Jahnu Boruah was arrested in Dibrugarh in December 2024 and confessed to planting four of the 11 IEDs recovered by police.
  • Since taking over the case in September 2024, the NIA has detained 19 suspects and continues to investigate under case number RC03/2024/NIA-GUW.
