NIA Attaches Thanjavur Property in Crackdown on Hizb-ut-Tahrir Network
The seizure under UAPA Section 25 is designed to choke off funding for clandestine indoctrination that allegedly backed an Islamic Caliphate cell in Tamil Nadu.
Overview
- On June 30, 2025, the National Investigation Agency invoked Section 25 of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act to attach a property owned by accused operative Bava Bahrudeen in Thanjavur.
- The land, originally held by the Hazarat Sams Manssor Peer Avuliya Dargah Trust Board, was transferred to Bahrudeen without formal registration, the agency said.
- Investigators allege the site hosted secret indoctrination sessions, recruitment classes and Khilafah exhibitions showcasing the military strength of nations such as Egypt, Iran, Turkey and Pakistan.
- This asset seizure marks the latest legal escalation in a probe into a Tamil Nadu-based Hizb-ut-Tahrir cell accused of seeking to establish an Islamic Caliphate in India.
- The move follows a series of NIA raids since mid-2024 and arrests made earlier this month to dismantle the network’s financial and logistical infrastructure.
