NIA Arrests Two More ULFA-I Accused in Assam Independence Day IED Plot
The arrests raise the total detained to three following June charge sheets against ULFA-I’s top leadership
Overview
- ULFA-I’s 2024 IED conspiracy sought to detonate bombs at over 20 locations across Assam on Independence Day, including an explosive device recovered at Dispur Last Gate in Guwahati.
- Bhargob Gogoi and Sumu Gogoi, both residents of Dibrugarh district, were taken into custody by the NIA in Guwahati on July 17 for their alleged roles in the Dispur Last Gate IED incident.
- Their detention brings the number of suspects held in case RC-03/2024/NIA-GUW to three after the agency arrested Girish Bora alias Gautam in September 2024.
- In June, the NIA charge-sheeted ULFA-I commanders Paresh Baruah, Abhijit Gogoi and Jahnu Boruah under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act and the Explosive Substances Act.
- The investigation, which the NIA took over from Dispur police in September 2024, remains active with further arrests anticipated as it tracks the group’s operational and cross-border networks.
