Overview
- The recall covers nearly 200,000 BMW vehicles across multiple 2019–2022 model years and 1,469 2020–2022 Toyota Supras built by BMW.
- Regulators cite a defect in the engine starter relay that can corrode, overheat, short-circuit, and ignite whether the vehicle is parked or being driven.
- Affected BMW models include the 2019–2022 Z4, 2019–2021 330i, 2020–2022 X3 and X4, 2020–2022 530i, 2021–2022 430i coupe and convertible, and the 2022 230i.
- Owners are urged to park outside and away from buildings until they verify their vehicle is not included or it has been repaired.
- BMW will roll out a phased recall with interim letters and an NHTSA license-plate or 17-digit VIN lookup launching Nov. 14, followed by a second notice when parts become available; questions can go to BMW customer service or the SaferCar app.
