NHTSA Opens Probe Into Nearly 2.9 Million Teslas Over Full Self-Driving Traffic Violations

The agency cites 58 reports of red-light failures or wrong-way maneuvers, with a review that could trigger a recall if regulators find an unreasonable safety risk.

Overview

  • The preliminary evaluation covers about 2.88 million U.S. Teslas equipped with FSD (Supervised) and FSD (Beta).
  • NHTSA tallied 58 incidents involving FSD, including 14 crashes and 23 injuries linked to alleged traffic-law violations.
  • ODI logged 18 complaints and one media report of failures to stop at red lights, including six crashes, four with injuries.
  • Investigators also cited 18 complaints, two media reports, and two SGO crash reports of FSD entering opposing lanes or turning the wrong way, sometimes with little warning to drivers.
  • Multiple incidents occurred at the same Joppa, Maryland intersection, which NHTSA says Tesla has addressed, and the probe could advance to a recall depending on ODI’s findings.
