Overview

  • NHTSA granted Zoox a first-ever federal motor vehicle safety standards exemption that covers all existing Zoox robotaxis for demonstration use.
  • The agency closed its investigation into Zoox’s June 2022 self-certification after reviewing the data and instructed the company to remove FMVSS compliance claims from its materials.
  • Zoox became the first U.S. automaker to secure a waiver under the Department of Transportation’s April expansion of the Automated Vehicle Exemption Program to include domestic AVs.
  • The exemption does not permit paid ride-hailing services, which will require a separate exemption and approval before commercial deployment.
  • Zoox is working with NHTSA to pursue a separate commercial exemption that would clear the way for paid robotaxi operations once approved.
