NHTSA Ends Investigation into Jeep Compass Engine Shutdowns
Regulators found low failure rate with no recall required for the 2019 and 2020 models.
- The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has closed an investigation into complaints about Jeep Compass SUVs' engines shutting down while being driven.
- The investigation was launched in response to 15 complaints about the 2019 and 2020 model years of the Jeep Compass, which were reported to have dashboard messages indicating high coolant temperature, followed by an immediate engine shutdown.
- The NHTSA found that the failure rate was low and that the SUVs could usually be restarted immediately after the engine shutdown.
- Only one allegation of a crash related to this issue was found, with no reported injuries.
- The NHTSA's findings agreed with Jeep maker Stellantis' conclusion that once the engine shuts down, the SUVs can be put in park and restarted without any issues.
