NHS Tribunal Examines Trans Doctor's Use of Female Changing Rooms

Dr. Beth Upton, a transgender NHS doctor, is at the center of an employment tribunal after nurse Sandie Peggie challenged their use of female changing rooms at Victoria Hospital in Kirkcaldy.
The dispute arose after Ms. Peggie, who has worked at the hospital for 30 years, confronted Dr. Upton in the changing rooms on Christmas Eve 2023, citing discomfort due to her belief that Dr. Upton is male.
Dr. Upton has argued that their gender identity as a woman should be respected and stated that they are 'biologically female,' a claim that has sparked debate over the definition of biological sex in science.
Ms. Peggie, who has previously experienced sexual assault, claims her right to access single-sex spaces was violated and has filed a complaint under the Equality Act 2010, alleging harassment related to her protected beliefs.
The tribunal has also examined allegations of bullying and harassment made by Dr. Upton against Ms. Peggie, which led to the nurse's suspension; the hearing continues as both sides present their cases.
