NHS to Trial AI Tool for Predicting Disease and Early Death Risk

The AI-ECG risk estimation tool will analyze ECG results to identify patients at risk of heart conditions, aiming for widespread NHS use within five years.

The AI tool, known as Aire, will be trialed at Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust and Chelsea and Westminster Hospital NHS Foundation Trust starting mid-2025.
Aire analyzes ECG tests to detect heart structure issues invisible to human clinicians, predicting risks of heart failure, rhythm problems, and cardiovascular disease.
Research shows Aire accurately identifies a patient's risk of death within 10 years in 78% of cases, based on a dataset of over 1.16 million ECG results.
The trials will initially involve several hundred patients, with plans to scale up and eventually integrate the tool into all NHS ECG procedures.
The AI aims to complement, not replace, doctors by providing insights beyond human capability, enhancing early intervention and disease prevention strategies.
