NHS to Trial AI Tool for Predicting Disease and Early Death Risk

The AI-ECG risk estimation tool will analyze ECG results to identify patients at risk of heart conditions, aiming for widespread NHS use within five years.

  • The AI tool, known as Aire, will be trialed at Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust and Chelsea and Westminster Hospital NHS Foundation Trust starting mid-2025.
  • Aire analyzes ECG tests to detect heart structure issues invisible to human clinicians, predicting risks of heart failure, rhythm problems, and cardiovascular disease.
  • Research shows Aire accurately identifies a patient's risk of death within 10 years in 78% of cases, based on a dataset of over 1.16 million ECG results.
  • The trials will initially involve several hundred patients, with plans to scale up and eventually integrate the tool into all NHS ECG procedures.
  • The AI aims to complement, not replace, doctors by providing insights beyond human capability, enhancing early intervention and disease prevention strategies.
