Surgeon Erased from UK Medical Register Over 'Closed Loop' 2020 Operation

The MPTS found his emergency bowel procedure risked the patient’s life and ruled that his failure to recognise complications plus later breaches of registration conditions made continued practice unsafe.

Overview

  • During an emergency operation on 25 August 2020 the tribunal found Dr Yasser Adly Abdel Rahman joined the wrong section of small intestine to the stomach, creating a ‘closed loop’ that prevented normal bowel passage.
  • Witnesses told the hearing the patient suffered uncontrollable pain, vomiting and no bowel movements for weeks while staff and family raised concerns that the surgeon did not adequately investigate or act on warning signs.
  • A different consultant took over care on 15 September 2020 and carried out a second emergency operation that salvaged bowel tissue and created a stoma to restore gastrointestinal function.
  • The tribunal accepted expert evidence that the original procedure was ‘not known to man’ and would likely have been fatal if not corrected, and it noted that regional reporting says the patient later died in May 2021 though the tribunal was not supplied with an inquest outcome.
  • The MPTS concluded his fitness to practise was impaired for serious professional misconduct, erased him from the UK register and imposed an immediate suspension pending any appeal after finding a lack of insight and an aggravating breach of post‑investigation conditions by working in Ireland in February 2022.
