NHS Satisfaction Hits Record Low as Public Confidence Declines

Only 21% of the public are satisfied with the NHS, with dissatisfaction driven by long waits, staff shortages, and poor access to key services, according to new survey results.

  • The British Social Attitudes survey reveals NHS satisfaction has fallen to 21%, the lowest level since the survey began in 1983, while dissatisfaction has risen to 59%.
  • A&E services report the lowest satisfaction levels, with only 19% of respondents satisfied, while NHS dentistry satisfaction has dropped to a record low of 20%.
  • Nearly one in 10 people report being harmed by NHS treatment or lack of access in the past three years, with disadvantaged groups disproportionately affected.
  • Public support for the NHS's founding principles—free at the point of use and funded by taxation—remains strong, with 90% of adults backing these ideals.
  • The Labour government has pledged £26 billion in funding over two years and is drafting a 10-year reform plan to address systemic challenges and rebuild trust.
