NHS Reissues Painkiller Safety Alert on Paracetamol and Ibuprofen Interactions

The health service stresses that people on certain medicines should seek advice before using over-the-counter pain relief.

Overview

  • Guidance highlights bleeding risk for warfarin users taking regular or higher-dose paracetamol and advises sticking to the lowest effective dose.
  • The NHS warns against taking paracetamol alongside other products that also contain it, such as some cold and flu remedies, due to overdose risk.
  • People are told not to combine ibuprofen with other NSAIDs—including aspirin, diclofenac, celecoxib or naproxen—because of increased chances of stomach bleeding and kidney problems.
  • Patients should tell their doctor about anticoagulants, blood‑pressure drugs, steroids, certain antibiotics or antidepressants, and diabetes medicines before using ibuprofen, and ginkgo biloba can also raise bleeding risk.
  • Urgent help or a call to 111 is advised if symptoms such as dark stools, blood in vomit, swollen ankles, blood in urine or inability to urinate occur after taking ibuprofen.
