NHS Reissues Covid Advice as UKHSA Data Show Small Dip in Hospital Cases

Older adults remain most at risk despite a recent fall in hospital metrics.

Overview

  • The NHS says people are more likely to catch Covid indoors or in crowded places due to exposure to respiratory droplets or contaminated surfaces.
  • For those at greater risk of severe illness, the NHS urges ventilation or outdoor meetings, keeping two metres from others, working from home where possible, and using face coverings or asking contacts to take lateral flow tests.
  • UKHSA surveillance for the week of October 27 shows hospital Covid test positivity averaged 5.7%, down from 7.7% the previous week.
  • Hospital admissions fell to 2.22 per 100,000, with people aged 85 and over still recording the highest rate at 22.71 per 100,000, down from 28.59.
  • The NHS notes people can still catch or spread the virus without symptoms or after vaccination, infectiousness often ends by day five but can last up to 10 days, and it advises contacting NHS 111 or a GP if symptoms worsen or meet set fever thresholds in infants and young children.
