NHS Issues Guidance on New Night-Time Urination as Possible UTI Sign

It notes that dark or strong-smelling urine on its own usually points to dehydration rather than infection.

Overview

  • People who begin waking at night to pass urine should contact a GP if the change is new and comes with other urinary symptoms.
  • Typical UTI signs include frequent or urgent urination, burning when peeing, cloudy or bloody urine, lower tummy or back pain, fever and low energy.
  • Children may present with irritability, vomiting or bedwetting, while older or frail adults can show sudden confusion or agitation.
  • Call 999 or go to A&E for red-flag symptoms such as drowsiness, difficulty speaking or extreme confusion that may signal kidney infection or sepsis.
  • UTIs usually result from gut bacteria entering the urinary tract, with higher risk in women, pregnancy, sexual activity, dehydration and kidney stones, and antibiotics are sometimes used but not always needed.
