NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde Rolls Out At-Home Phototherapy for Newborn Jaundice
Daily home monitoring with strict criteria aims to keep treatment safe for families.
Overview
- The Royal Hospital for Children in Glasgow began the service on November 24, 2025, and by January 8, 2026, 40 babies had received treatment at home.
- Eligible infants receive phototherapy through a sleeping bag–style garment that delivers therapeutic light, reducing the need for hospital readmission.
- A neonatal senior nurse visits daily to check bilirubin levels and assess progress, with additional phone support available to families.
- The dedicated team comprises four senior neonatal nurses, four consultants and a service improvement manager, and it currently operates six treatment units.
- Community midwives screen during routine home visits to refer eligible babies, and treatment typically runs two to eight days depending on results.
