Overview
- Over two days the NHRC heard 109 cases spanning caste discrimination, custodial violence, police excesses and breaches of life, dignity and livelihood rights in Telangana
- On July 29 it directed secretaries of Gurukul school societies to submit a four-week report on 48 student deaths and 886 food-poisoning incidents
- The commission recommended Rs 49.65 lakh in compensation, of which the state has paid Rs 22.5 lakh and pledged the remaining amount
- NHRC members held a meeting with Chief Secretary K. Ramakrishna Rao, DGP Mahesh Bhagwat and other senior officials to review action on earlier recommendations
- In sessions with NGOs, civil society groups and the Telangana State Human Rights Commission, the NHRC emphasized preventive and systemic steps to curb future violations
