NHRC Seeks FIR Over Ranbir Kapoor Vaping Cameo in Netflix Series

The rights body set a two-week deadline for an action report, citing a possible breach of India’s 2019 e‑cigarette ban.

Overview

  • The National Human Rights Commission issued notices after a complaint about a scene showing Ranbir Kapoor using a vape without a statutory warning in The Ba***ds of Bollywood.
  • The Commission asked the Mumbai Police to register an FIR against the actor, the producers and Netflix, and to investigate e‑cigarette manufacturers and importers.
  • It also urged the Information and Broadcasting Ministry to act to prohibit such content on streaming platforms and to report back within two weeks.
  • The NHRC said the allegations, if true, amount to a prima facie violation of Sections 4 and 7 of the Prohibition of Electronic Cigarettes Act, 2019.
  • No official public response had been reported from Netflix, Ranbir Kapoor or the production team; the Aryan Khan–directed series premiered on Netflix on September 18.
