NHRC Orders 10-Day Report on Indore NICU Rat-Bite Deaths as Families Allege Negligence

The human-rights watchdog has given Madhya Pradesh officials 10 days to explain their handling of the case.

Overview

  • Following a complaint by Network for Access to Justice, the NHRC issued a September 5 notice to the state health department and the Indore district magistrate seeking an action-taken report within 10 days.
  • At least two newborn girls were bitten by rats in MY Hospital’s neonatal ICU on August 30–31 and died on September 2–3, with hospital officials attributing the deaths to severe congenital anomalies, pneumonia or septicaemia rather than rat bites.
  • Parents say they were told to wait for updates and learned of a death days later, disputing claims they abandoned their child and alleging injuries including four missing fingers discovered when the body was unwrapped.
  • Hospital measures include suspending two nursing officers, removing the nursing superintendent, issuing show‑cause notices to senior staff, terminating the pest‑control contract and imposing a ₹1 lakh fine on the vendor.
  • Jai Adivasi Yuva Shakti and opposition leaders held protests seeking FIRs and ₹1 crore compensation per family, while district authorities provided ₹5 lakh in financial aid to one bereaved family as calls for accountability grew.
