Overview
- The NHRC hosted a day-long national conference in New Delhi titled “Revamping Spaces, Reclaiming Voices” and unveiled a comprehensive report on transgender rights.
- Chairperson Justice V. Ramasubramanian said transgender people face entrenched discrimination in health care, education, employment, housing and access to toilets.
- He cited OHCHR findings that millions face rejection, harassment and violence, and referenced TGEU data recording 350 murders from Oct. 1, 2023 to Sept. 30, 2024, including 12 in India, and the 5,000th case since 2008.
- While asserting India is ahead in legal recognition, he noted an implementation gap, crediting the legislature, executive and judiciary for advances that still fall short in practice.
- The new report urges stronger Garima Greh shelters and delivery systems, calling for monitoring committees, timely funding, support for identity certificates, expanded health coverage and job links, as officials highlighted schemes such as SMILE, Ayush cards and vocational training.
