NHRC Asks Mumbai Police to File FIR Over Ranbir Kapoor Vaping Scene in Netflix’s ‘The Ba***ds of Bollywood’

Citing India’s 2019 e‑cigarette ban, the rights body gave Mumbai Police two weeks to file an action report.

Overview

  • The commission issued notices to the Information & Broadcasting Ministry and the Mumbai Police after a complaint about a vaping cameo without a health warning.
  • It recommended registration of an FIR against Ranbir Kapoor, the producers and Netflix under the Prohibition of Electronic Cigarettes Act, 2019.
  • Mumbai Police were told to probe the supply chain by identifying manufacturers and importers of e‑cigarettes and to submit an action report within two weeks.
  • The complaint, filed by Vinay Joshi of the Legal Rights Observatory, alleges the depiction could mislead young viewers by normalising a banned product.
  • The NHRC urged the I&B Ministry to curb such depictions on OTT platforms, while Netflix, Kapoor and the production team had not publicly responded at publication time.
