NHL Suspends Penguins’ Bryan Rust Three Games for Illegal Check to Brock Boeser’s Head

The ruling followed Boeser’s placement on injured reserve in concussion protocol.

Overview

  • The Department of Player Safety said Rust’s hit made Boeser’s head the primary point of contact and that the head contact was avoidable under the rule.
  • Rust will forfeit about $80,078, with the funds directed to the NHL Players’ Emergency Assistance Fund.
  • He will miss the Penguins’ games against the Blackhawks, Rangers and Senators and is eligible to return Feb. 3 at the Islanders.
  • Boeser was injured on the play, entered concussion protocol and was placed on injured reserve for at least a week.
  • Player Safety cited Boeser’s injury and Rust’s previously clean record in setting the length, and Penguins coach Dan Muse said he did not agree with the suspension.
