NHL Punishes Lightning Over Panthers Preseason Brawl With Suspensions and Fines

The league said Scott Sabourin’s punch was deliberate retribution meant to send a message.

Overview

  • Scott Sabourin was suspended four games for roughing Aaron Ekblad; the ban applies only to NHL games and he was reassigned to AHL Syracuse.
  • Defenseman J.J. Moser received a two-game suspension for boarding Jesper Boqvist and will miss Tampa Bay’s first two regular-season games.
  • The Lightning were fined $100,000 and coach Jon Cooper $25,000, with money directed to the NHL’s Club Fine Fund.
  • Roman Schmidt ($2,098.52) and Gage Goncalves ($3,125) were fined the maximum allowed for separate cross-checks, with proceeds to the Players’ Emergency Assistance Fund.
  • Saturday’s game produced 65 penalties, 16 ejections and 312 penalty minutes; no Panthers received supplemental discipline, and Ekblad practiced Monday and is expected to play in Florida’s opener.
