NHAI Unveils Sustainability Report Highlighting Emissions Cut and Circular Economy Scale-Up

Overview

  • The NHAI cut greenhouse gas emissions intensity from 1.0 to 0.8 MTCO2e per km in FY 2023-24 despite a 20 percent increase in highway construction.
  • Over 631 lakh tonnes of recycled materials including fly ash, plastic waste and reclaimed asphalt were deployed, with pilot projects using plastic waste on several highway stretches.
  • Ongoing green highway initiatives added 67.47 lakh saplings in early FY 2024-25, raising total plantations since 2015 to more than 4.69 crore.
  • Under the Amrit Sarovar Mission, development of 467 water bodies provided 2.4 crore cubic meters of soil and saved about Rs 16,690 crore, while water use intensity fell by 74 percent in stressed regions.
  • An AI-powered Data Lake 3.0 platform streamlined project management and resolved 155 conciliation claims to save Rs 25,680 crore; FASTag usage climbed to 98.5 percent to reduce toll plaza emissions.
