Overview

  • The NGT has appointed the Maharashtra Pollution Control Board as nodal agency for a joint committee to inspect Powai Lake within two weeks.
  • The committee, also comprising officials from the Central Pollution Control Board and Maharashtra State Wetland Authority, will verify pollution grievances on site.
  • Panel members must submit a detailed remediation plan to the NGT’s Western Zone Bench in Pune within one month.
  • Formal notices have been issued to the BMC, MPCB, MSWA and the Maharashtra government with a September deadline to explain past neglect and outline pollution control measures.
  • Powai Lake’s ecological decline includes 80% surface coverage by invasive water hyacinths and daily sewage inflows of roughly 18 million litres, leading the BMC to float a Rs 71-crore tender for a sewage treatment plant.
