NGT Issues Notice Over Alleged Tree Felling, Encroachments Near Taj Mahal

The case invokes a Supreme Court directive requiring prior approval for any tree felling within five kilometres of the monument.

Overview

  • The tribunal issued notices to the Centre, the Uttar Pradesh government and local authorities on a plea alleging environmental violations in Agra’s ecologically sensitive areas.
  • It permitted the Agra Development Authority to be added as a respondent and listed agencies including the Taj Trapezium Zone Authority, the district magistrate and the district forest officer.
  • Respondents were ordered to file reply affidavits within four weeks, and the matter is scheduled for hearing on March 12, 2026.
  • The petition alleges the Agra Development Authority is constructing kiosks and paved structures in Shahjahan Park, with excavation near roots of century-old trees said to harm green cover and wildlife habitats.
  • Additional claims cite a municipal concrete selfie point on a designated green belt, private encroachments and tree cutting along the Agra–Gwalior highway, and alleged unpermitted felling during metro works by L&T.
