Overview

  • The NGT bench formally added NIH as a respondent on July 16 and directed it to submit remedial suggestions ahead of the October 16 hearing.
  • CWC’s monthly monitoring since 2011 of 100 high-altitude lakes shows 34 with rising water spreads, 20 shrinking and 44 unchanged.
  • A newly finalized risk-indexing framework ranks lakes into three categories based on failure likelihood and downstream damage potential.
  • Mapping of flow paths identified 67 dams—23 in Himachal Pradesh and 21 in Uttarakhand—lying directly in flood trajectories.
  • Beyond the 100-lake study, CWC oversees remote-sensing surveillance of 902 lakes and supports the ₹150 crore National GLOF Risk Mitigation Program under NDMA guidance.
