NGT Demands Time-Bound Waste Compliance From Delhi, Sets July Hearing

The bench directed the chief secretary to deliver fixed-format updates focused on sewage performance with Yamuna water-quality disclosure.

Overview

  • Delhi was told to file detailed, time-bound progress reports covering sewer connections, drain-wise flows, STP performance and steps to close gaps.
  • The tribunal cited 792 MGD of sewage generation against about 704 MGD of treatment capacity, an 88 MGD gap, with nine STPs not meeting standards as of September 2025.
  • On solid waste, Delhi generates roughly 11,000 tonnes daily with capacity for about 8,000 tonnes, and the NGT said it would avoid parallel directives since the Supreme Court is seized of the issue.
  • The NGT flagged ongoing discharge of untreated or partially treated sewage into the Yamuna, including at Wazirabad barrage and Asgharpur, and asked DPCC to submit river water-quality data.
  • Advocates Katyayni and Vikrant Badesra were appointed as amici curiae, and the case was listed for further hearing on July 6, 2026, with Delhi’s previously stated plan to add 7,750 tpd processing by December 2028 noted on record.
