NGO Report Finds Climate Misinformation Surging on French Airwaves

The coalition calls for coordinated action to curb systemic false claims without eroding public trust.

Overview

  • Data For Good, QuotaClimat and Science Feedback documented 529 instances of climate misinformation in French audiovisual news between January and August 2025 and identified 19 recurring disinformation narratives, with cases tripling over the summer during political flashpoints and heatwaves.
  • Continuous news and private broadcasters were most exposed, with the public sector six times less affected; CNews averaged about one misleading claim per hour and Sud Radio one every 40 minutes, with Europe 1 and RMC also flagged.
  • More than 90% of misleading statements targeted transition solutions, with roughly 70% focused on energy, 10% on mobility and 9% on France’s role in international climate action.
  • In private outlets, 46% of problematic claims came from journalists or commentators, compared with 8% in the public sector where 92% originated with invited guests, often political figures.
  • The NGOs call for journalist training, stronger regulation and protection of public media, as well as a swift review of deputy Stéphane Delautrette’s bill to secure reliable environmental information for the public.
