NFL Urges Nevada Supreme Court to Compel Arbitration in Gruden's Lawsuit

Justices to decide on whether Gruden was aware of arbitration process at time of signing his contract with the Raiders.

  • The Supreme Court of Nevada presided over an oral argument between an attorney for the NFL and commissioner Roger Goodell and an attorney for former Las Vegas Raiders head coach Jon Gruden.
  • The NFL attorney urged the court to reverse a previous ruling that denied the NFL’s motion to compel arbitration for Gruden’s lawsuit, in which Gruden accuses the league and Goodell of negligence and intentionally interfering with his contract.
  • The NFL attorney argued that Gruden was aware of the arbitration process, as it was included in his employment contract, and that Gruden is a sophisticated party due to his long history with the NFL.
  • Gruden's attorney claimed that Gruden was not provided with the arbitration language at the time of signing his contract.
  • The justices will issue an opinion in the next several weeks or months.
