NFL Suspends Commanders’ Frankie Luvu One Game for Repeat Hip-Drop Tackles

The decision enforces the league’s ban on the technique after two earlier fines.

Overview

  • Luvu was cited for his third hip-drop tackle of the season during Sunday night’s loss to Seattle, on a takedown of Jaxon Smith-Njigba with 7:55 left in the first quarter.
  • The suspension is without pay and would sideline him for Washington’s Week 10 game against the Lions on Nov. 9, with eligibility to return on Nov. 10 if it stands.
  • He previously drew fines for similar infractions in Week 4 and Week 8.
  • The NFL referenced Rule 12, Section 2, Article 18 (a)(b), which defines the hip-drop technique as a foul designed to protect runners’ legs.
  • Luvu intends to appeal, and under the CBA the case could be heard by Derrick Brooks, Ramon Foster, or Jordy Nelson.
