NFL head coaches will no longer be required to personally throw the red flag for a replay challenge.

Overview

  • The league revised Rule 15, Section 1, Article 1, and on Monday confirmed that the head coach or the head coach’s pregame challenge designee can start a challenge by throwing the red flag.
  • Teams that use the option must notify the officiating crew of the designee before the game begins and the change is voluntary for every club.
  • All standard challenge mechanics remain the same: teams get two challenges per game, can earn a third if one is overturned, and lose a timeout for an unsuccessful challenge.
  • The tweak was made during routine summer rulebook adjustments that do not require an owners’ vote and follows a 2025 season that featured 151 coach challenges.
  • The move may reduce heat-of-the-moment flag throws and shift some sideline duties to assistants, though many head coaches are expected to retain strong control over the actual challenge decision.
