NFL Considers Ban on Controversial Hip-Drop Tackle

Players Argue Technique is Necessary, While 'Tush Push' Play Likely to Remain Legal

  • NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell and Executive Vice President of Football Operations Troy Vincent have indicated that the league is ready to ban the controversial hip-drop tackle, a move that has led to significant injuries to key players this year.
  • The hip-drop tackle, dubbed the 'cousin of the horse collar', occurs when a defensive player uses his body weight on the legs of the ball-carrier by leading with his hip, often used by smaller players to take down bigger ones.
  • The injury rate for this tackle is reportedly 25 times higher than other tackling methods, according to Jeff Miller, the NFL’s executive vice president of communications, public affairs and policy.
  • Several players, including Jets cornerback D.J. Reed and Giants linebacker Isaiah Simmons, argue that the hip-drop is not used maliciously and is a necessary technique for tackling larger opponents.
  • Meanwhile, the Tush Push, a successful quarterback sneak play used by the Philadelphia Eagles, has been under discussion at league meetings, but it appears likely to remain legal for now.
