Newsom’s SAFE Task Force Clears South L.A. Freeway Encampment

The joint state-city team says every person living there accepted shelter before the site was cleared.

Overview

  • Crews removed tents, hazardous waste and roughly 340 cubic yards of debris along the 110 Freeway between 87th and 88th streets after Caltrans deemed the area unsafe.
  • The operation marked the task force’s first in Southern California and was coordinated with Mayor Karen Bass’s Inside Safe program and Los Angeles County.
  • Notice began Friday with services provided Monday, and about 40 people at the site accepted shelter and support ahead of Tuesday’s cleanup.
  • Caltrans plans landscaping and fencing to prevent repopulation, and city crews planned to place boulders as additional deterrents.
  • Officials identified another encampment near Manchester Avenue for follow-up as the coordinated campaign continues.
