Newsom Tops Early 2028 Democratic Preference in New Yahoo/YouGov Poll

He has not announced a 2028 bid, yet he now leads Democratic-leaning voters at 21 percent in national preference testing.

Overview

  • Kamala Harris places second at 19 percent, followed by Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez at 12 percent, Pete Buttigieg at 10 percent, JB Pritzker at 7 percent, Josh Shapiro and Tim Walz at 4 percent each, and Gretchen Whitmer at 2 percent.
  • The Yahoo/YouGov survey was conducted online Aug. 29 to Sept. 2 among 1,690 U.S. adults with an estimated 3.1-point margin of error.
  • Democrats under 45 prefer Harris (27 percent) and Ocasio-Cortez (22 percent) over Newsom (13 percent), while Democrats over 45 give Newsom a clear lead over Harris, 26 percent to 13 percent.
  • Newsom’s overall favorability registers 31 percent favorable to 41 percent unfavorable, compared with a 62 percent to 14 percent favorable split among Democrats; his Trump-style social media approach is viewed more negatively than positively, 43 percent to 33 percent.
  • Recent coverage links Newsom’s rise to a high-profile California redistricting push and his sharpened attacks on President Trump, and separate Leger polling shows him narrowly ahead of Trump, JD Vance and Marco Rubio in hypothetical 2028 matchups even as Harris leads that poll’s Democratic primary.
