- AB 495, known as the “Plan de Preparación Familiar,” is now law and takes effect on January 1, 2026.
- Courts may authorize temporary joint guardianship with a designated adult, the definition of eligible relatives expands to the fifth degree, and caregivers can consent to school-related medical care.
- Local educational agencies and state preschool programs are barred from collecting immigration‑status information, from sharing student or family records with immigration officials, and from allowing enforcement access to non‑public areas.
- The Attorney General must update school model policies by December 1, 2025; LEAs must align policies by March 1, 2026; childcare and preschool model policies are due April 1, 2026; state preschools must adopt them by July 1, 2026.
