Newsmax becomes the latest right-wing outlet to settle a defamation lawsuit from Dominion Voting Systems over the broadcasting of 2020 election lies.

Overview

  • Newsmax disclosed in an SEC filing and Delaware court docket that it will pay Dominion $67 million to resolve a defamation lawsuit over false 2020 election claims.
  • The payment plan calls for $27 million on August 15, 2025, followed by $20 million by January 15, 2026, and $20 million by January 15, 2027.
  • The agreement ends the suit filed in August 2021—which initially sought $1.6 billion in damages—before a jury could determine whether Newsmax acted with malice.
  • In April 2025, Delaware Superior Court Judge Eric Davis found that Dominion presented “clear and convincing evidence” that Newsmax broadcast false statements likely to harm its reputation.
  • Newsmax defended its reporting as fair and criticized the court process, while Dominion said it was pleased to have settled the matter.
