Newsmax becomes the latest right-wing outlet to settle a defamation lawsuit from Dominion Voting Systems over the broadcasting of 2020 election lies.

Overview

  • Newsmax and Dominion reached the $67 million agreement on August 15, 2025, funding the payout with a $27 million initial installment followed by $20 million due by January 15, 2026, and another $20 million by January 15, 2027.
  • In April, Delaware Superior Court Judge Eric Davis ruled that Newsmax broadcast false statements about Dominion and found clear and convincing evidence of defamation, setting the stage for a trial that was postponed.
  • Newsmax said it stands by its 2020 election coverage as fair and balanced but opted to settle after concluding the court process would be unfair to the network.
  • Dominion Voting Systems confirmed it was “pleased to have settled this matter,” closing its lawsuit against Newsmax before jury deliberations could begin.
  • The deal follows other high-profile resolutions—including Newsmax’s $40 million settlement with Smartmatic and Fox News’s $787.5 million payment to Dominion—and highlights growing legal accountability for election misinformation.
