Newcastle Expands Christmas Market as Liverpool Opens With Which? Backing

A local-first approach and transparent price guides define this year's launches.

Overview

  • Both markets opened November 15, with Liverpool trading at St George’s Plateau until December 24 and Newcastle running across the city centre until December 23.
  • Newcastle’s market now spans five zones including new site Nelson Street, launched with a ribbon-cutting and performances by Easington Colliery Band and Newcastle Cathedral Choir.
  • Organisers in Newcastle say well over 80% of traders are local, a policy that saw the nationally touring Grill Tower not return, while Moosenwirt stays open until January 1.
  • Newcastle adds Mallow & Mulled, raised ‘North Pole’ igloos, a 15m Ferris wheel and Mrs Claus’ Bakery; Liverpool features Santa Land, a vintage carousel, fairground games and its Big Wheel.
  • Local press posted full price lists, with Liverpool pints and classic mulled wine at £6.50 (spirit add-ons £8.50), and Newcastle menus detailing items such as £6.50 mulled wine and £3 marshmallows at the new pop-up.
