Overview

  • Runway 4L-22R reopened on June 2, nearly two weeks before its June 15 target after the Port Authority added shifts and doubled asphalt production.
  • The $121 million overhaul repaved the 11,000-foot runway, upgraded LED lighting and drainage systems, and installed new underground electrical infrastructure.
  • Two other runways will remain fully operational during planned night and weekend shutdowns through December to complete the remaining work.
  • The FAA has capped flights at Newark through October due to staffing shortages, runway capacity constraints and repeated communications outages.
  • Federal and airport officials are rolling out fiber-optic upgrades and a new radar hub in Philadelphia to strengthen air traffic control and curb ongoing disruptions.
