Newark Airport Measles Alert Updated to Dec. 12, Health Officials Say

The corrected timeline narrows contact tracing as the symptom window runs to Jan. 2, 2026.

Overview

  • The New Jersey Department of Health said a non-resident with measles was infectious in Terminals B and C from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Dec. 12 after correcting an earlier Dec. 19 alert and issuing an apology.
  • Officials are identifying and notifying potential contacts, urging anyone exposed or symptomatic to call a provider before seeking in-person care and to review MMR vaccination status.
  • As of Dec. 26, the state had not identified additional New Jersey cases linked to the Newark exposure, and exposed travelers could develop symptoms through Jan. 2.
  • Separate from the airport alert, Contra Costa Health reported a case contagious in public from Dec. 17–24 with possible exposures at retail stores, an urgent care clinic, and a hospital in Walnut Creek and Lafayette.
  • These alerts arrive during a national measles resurgence, with 2,012 U.S. cases reported in 2025 and 93% of patients unvaccinated or of unknown vaccination status, according to the CDC.
