New York Warns of Scams as Inflation Refund Checks Roll Out

Officials warn that any request for personal or bank details is a scam.

Overview

  • Mailings began Sept. 26 and will continue in batches through November, according to state officials.
  • More than 8 million households are slated to receive up to $400 each as part of a $2 billion inflation refund program.
  • Eligible recipients are identified from 2023 Form IT-201 filings with specified income thresholds, and those claimed as dependents do not qualify.
  • Residents do not need to apply or provide information; the Tax Department and IRS will not call or text for personal data, and suspicious messages should be blocked, deleted, and reported.
  • Checks are sent automatically to the address on the most recent return, there is no region-by-region schedule, and customer service cannot provide status updates on individual checks.
