New York Times Tech Workers Strike Over Return-to-Office Policy Amidst Accusations of Unilateral Implementation

Half-day strike involving nearly 700 workers challenges policy implemented prior to recognition of largest US Tech Union; National Labor Relations Board yet to rule on Times' approach.

  • Nearly 700 tech workers at the New York Times plan to strike for half a day over the publisher's return-to-office policy, which they claim was attempted to be enforced unilaterally.
  • The strike includes demonstrations on Zoom and outside the company's headquarters in Manhattan, where some workers donned Halloween costumes.
  • The Times' return-to-office policy was issued before the Times Tech Guild (TTG) was recognized early last year, when workers voted 404-88 to join the NewsGuild of New York, creating the largest tech union in the U.S. with bargaining rights.
  • The union has been in contract talks with the company for over a year and accuses the Times of refusing to recognize their rights to bargain on return-to-office rules and using it as a tactic to intimidate them.
  • Despite facing accusations of violating federal law by allegedly implementing a return-to-office plan and failing to negotiate with the union over it, a spokesperson for the New York Times stated that the U.S. National Labor Relations Board had not ruled against its approach.
