New York Philharmonic Dismisses Two Musicians Over Misconduct Allegations

Principal oboist Liang Wang and associate principal trumpet Matthew Muckey face termination following renewed allegations of sexual misconduct and abuse of power.

The decision to fire Wang and Muckey comes after the orchestra's union chose not to contest the allegations, which include sexual abuse and power misuse.
Both musicians were previously fired in 2018 due to similar allegations but were reinstated in 2020 after arbitration.
Recent investigations revealed new accusations involving 11 women against Wang and three against Muckey, with some allegations made by students.
The Philharmonic's executive adviser stated that fear of speaking out previously prevented these allegations from surfacing sooner.
A significant portion of the orchestra's members expressed their refusal to perform on stage with the accused musicians, leading to their permanent exclusion from the Philharmonic.
